Queensland Hillclimb Champs 2009

Galleries

G'day.

Its been 18 months since I last photographed a hillclimb, not a lot has changed. Still a lot of silly buggers going flat out. Its got me beat why anyone in their right mind would spend a Sunday doing this. No this is not sour grapes for not getting an entry in in time, well maybe just a bit. Yeah ok ok it is sour grapes.

I have a bit of a dilemma, my camera gear needs replacing. This is not a cheap exercise, camera body is going to cost me 6 grand and a couple of fresh lenses will set me back about 9 grand. The problem is do I hang onto the steel crank and rods, the 48 webers, forged pistons etc, all the good go faster bits, or do I upgrade the photo gear. ..........Please advise

Greg Ackland, what can I say. I hear he beat a long standing record, not once but four (4) times. I am not sure if my info is correct as there seems to be some dispute over this. The previous record holder insists that the old record was set on a gravel track with steam power.

I have a request for a few competitors, please do not crash or go off in front of me, I try very hard not to get photos of people crashing as I believe in karma these photos are likely to come back and bite me. Ainsley please keep it on the track and stop trying to jinx me !!. Same goes for Paul Van Wijk !

Allan McConnell has a lot to answer for, those flamin cameras he has been selling spoil some really nice photos, just about every car has one stuck on somewhere, Roy's GT6 is a nice looking car ruined by little silver boxes hanging off it at all angles. I even saw one on Bill's G.E.K although in his case it may have been an improvement.

The lengths some blokes go to, to ruin the looks of their cars so they don't have to buy photos. John Walker fitted the blue wheels off the MGA to the V8. John, has no one told you that metallic blue and orange just don't work, you must spend more time on getting the colours right. As for Paul Masterson hanging that big lump of  pipe on the exhaust just to ruin the photos was a bit over the top.

The finish line is always good for a bit of action. The wildest ride I saw was Chris Sloane, yep that quiet bloke, I dont think he would have been too quiet when the Datto started leaping about with wheels in the air and the armco bracing itself waiting for the impact. (I thought I had better photos). Next was Danny, but he was just being Danny then came Michael Ciccotelli, check out his photos, something fell off as he went across the finish line sideway.

One of the best looking cars is John Broadbents TVR, although I hear that it tends to buck a bit, John says he is covered in bruises. I reckon it has something to do with the suspension being setup for Silverstone, perhaps someone should take John aside and tell him that the hairpin at Mt Cotton is a bit different to going flat through Copse or Becketts.

more soon.....
